Hi! I'm Bailee, a wedding hair and makeup specialist and the creator of Coastal Editorial Glam™ and The Bailee Wave + Sculpt™.
Planning your bridal hair and makeup trial is exciting — but a lot of brides show up with the wrong things or unsure what they’re actually supposed to bring.
The truth is, the right preparation makes a huge difference. A preview isn’t just about “trying a look.” It’s where we design a style that will hold up through humidity, photos, hugs, dancing, and a very long wedding timeline.
Bringing a few key things helps us make the most of that appointment.
Here’s what I recommend bringing to your bridal hair and makeup preview.
Pinterest is amazing for gathering ideas — but when it comes your bridal hair and makeup trial, less is more.
Instead of bringing dozens of photos, narrow it down to 3–5 images that show the same general style. Make sure that there’s a photo of the sides and back. Videos are great but screenshots from the video are better so we’re both not sitting there for 2-3 minutes while waiting to get to a certain spot in the video.
This helps your artist understand:
If the photos vary too much, it becomes harder to design something cohesive.
Your preview works best when we’re refining a vision, not sorting through fifty possibilities.
If you’re wearing a veil, headpiece, comb, or pins, bring them to your preview.
These pieces affect:
For example, a cathedral veil places different demands on a hairstyle than a fingertip veil or decorative comb.
Testing the placement ahead of time ensures everything sits beautifully and stays secure on your wedding day.
Also bring all your jewelry if you have them already. It helps complete the whole look.

If you already have clip-in extensions, bring them with you, but oonnnlllllyyyy if your 10000% that they’re real human hair.
Hair density and length play a huge role in the final shape of a bridal style. Even small additions can dramatically improve the structure and longevity of a hairstyle.
Many brides also choose to use extensions specifically for wedding styling.
If you don’t own extensions, don’t worry — many bridal artists (myself included) offer clip-in extension rentals in (I do with every booking) designed to create fuller, longer-lasting styles.
You can also explore professional options like:
You don’t need to bring the dress itself — a photo works perfectly; I want to see the front, the back, the sides.
Your gown helps guide the overall design of your bridal look. The neckline, fabric, and silhouette all influence how the hair and makeup should balance.
For example:
Seeing the dress allows your artist to design a look that complements the entire bridal aesthetic.
One of the biggest bridal hair myths is that dirty hair holds styles better. Who ever started that lie deserves jail time.
In reality, clean hair performs much better for professional styling.
Freshly washed hair allows your stylist to control product placement and structure the style properly.
When in doubt:
If it’s dirty enough for dry shampoo, it’s too dirty to properly style. This gives your stylist the best possible starting point.
Your bridal hair and makeup trial isn’t the time to experiment with new skincare.
Stick with your usual routine and avoid introducing new products that could irritate your skin.
This is the one time I’m going to tell you to skip sunscreen – it can make you have weird flashback and can affect certain products.
Good preparation usually means:
Healthy, comfortable skin helps makeup sit more smoothly and last longer.
This may be the most important thing to bring.
Sometimes an inspiration photo needs small adjustments to work with your hair type, face shape, or wedding environment.
A good preview is a collaborative process. Your artist will use your inspiration as a starting point, then refine the details so the look works beautifully for you.
The goal isn’t copying a photo exactly — it’s creating a bridal look that feels like the best version of you.
The preview is where your wedding look truly comes together.
With the right preparation, we can test the structure of your hairstyle, refine the makeup finish, and make sure everything is designed to hold up through the entire wedding day.
If you want help staying organized during the planning process, I also created a printable Bridal Planner that many brides use to track beauty prep, timelines, and vendor details.
It’s a simple way to keep all your wedding prep in one place.
Your bridal hair and makeup preview should feel exciting, not overwhelming.
Coming prepared helps us focus on the fun part — designing a wedding look that feels polished, balanced, and truly yours.
