Hi! I'm Bailee, a wedding hair and makeup specialist and the creator of Coastal Editorial Glam™ and The Bailee Wave + Sculpt™.
A wedding mood board might sound a little mysterious if you’ve never made one before.
Is it something that helps you identify your feelings?
Not exactly.
Mood boards are actually one of the most useful tools you can use while planning your wedding. They help you visualize the overall vibe, design direction, and atmosphere of your event.
Instead of simply saving random photos you like, a wedding mood board helps you organize inspiration into something that represents the feeling you want your wedding to have.
Think of it as the visual blueprint for your wedding.
Let’s use my personal wedding mood board for an example.

Mood boards are made up of several different design elements. When I build one, I usually include:
• one fabric
• one metallic element
• one texture
In my mood board:
• the gold background represents the metallic
• pearls provide the texture
• chiffon represents the fabric
I also included dresses to show the colors I wanted my bridesmaids to wear. A few bouquet ideas made it onto the board simply so I wouldn’t forget them, and the cake inspiration stayed because it was just too unique to leave out.
Mood boards don’t have to be perfect — they just need to communicate the feeling you’re trying to create.
Here are a few photos from my actual wedding.

As you can see, my wedding ended up leaning heavily into 1920s-inspired details with pearls, feathers, and vintage elements.
Some details stayed true to the mood board, while others evolved during the planning process — which is completely normal.
Mood boards are meant to guide the overall direction, not dictate every single detail.

Another trick I like to use when creating a wedding mood board is assigning three to five descriptive words to it.
These words help define the overall aesthetic and make it easier to communicate your vision to your vendors.

Many people would describe this board as cottage-core.

Personally, I would call this one gothic.

I would say that this board definitely has a west coast vibe to it.

I feel transported to 1920s Chicago.

This board reminds me of early spring in a northeastern state.

This board looks like it was taken from a New Year’s Eve wedding.

I could 100% see these photos from a country-club wedding.
Mood boards aren’t just helpful for wedding planning.
I use them frequently for:
• business inspiration
• home design projects
• seasonal décor ideas
They’re simply a great way to organize inspiration and translate ideas into something visual.
A wedding mood board is one of the easiest ways to clarify your vision before you start making major planning decisions.
It helps you communicate your aesthetic, keep your design choices consistent, and give your vendors a better understanding of the atmosphere you’re trying to create.
And the best part?
Your wedding doesn’t have to match your mood board perfectly — it just needs to capture the feeling you want for your day.
