Hi! I'm Bailee, a wedding hair and makeup specialist and the creator of Coastal Editorial Glam™ and The Bailee Wave + Sculpt™.
If you’ve started researching wedding hair and makeup, you may have had a moment of sticker shock.
You’ve probably paid to have your hair done before. Maybe you’ve had professional makeup done before. So why does bridal hair and makeup cost more than a regular salon appointment? And is the infamous “wedding tax” actually real?
In this episode of The Tasteful Dossier, I’m digging into the actual math behind bridal hair and makeup pricing—and the much bigger difference between paying for a salon service and hiring a specialist for your wedding day.
The conversation started with a bride who told me finding someone who specialized in Hollywood waves felt like finding a needle in a haystack.
Then she told me she expected bridal hair and makeup to cost about $350. Tops.
That made me wonder: where does that number come from?
One of the biggest misconceptions around wedding hair and makeup pricing is that you’re paying only for the time spent in the chair.
You’re not.
A bridal beauty booking can include months of communication, a bridal preview, timeline planning, vendor coordination, product testing, kit preparation, sanitation, travel, additional artists and the logistics required to make an entire wedding morning run on time.
Then there’s the expectation placed on the finished look.
Wedding hair and makeup may need to survive heat, humidity, wind, a veil, professional photography, hours of movement and an entire wedding day.
And when you’re searching for a specialist—whether that’s Hollywood waves, a particular makeup style or another technical service—the comparison changes again.

This is the part of the episode that extends beyond bridal hair and makeup pricing.
Pinterest gives us extraordinary access to wedding inspiration while removing most of the context behind it.
You see the Hollywood waves. You don’t necessarily see the extensions underneath them, the years of practice behind them or what creating that exact result actually costs.
So maybe the better question isn’t simply, “Why does bridal hair and makeup cost so much?”
It’s:
What is this picture showing me that it isn’t telling me?
That’s what we’re getting into in this episode of The Tasteful Dossier.
