Hi! I'm Bailee, a wedding hair and makeup specialist and the creator of Coastal Editorial Glam™ and The Bailee Wave + Sculpt™.
When Olaplex announced a new version of its cult-favorite No. 7 Bonding Oil, I was immediately intrigued.
As a bridal hairstylist, I’m always looking for products that can help combat the two biggest enemies of wedding hair: frizz and dullness. Those are also two of the biggest complaints I hear from brides, especially here along the coast where humidity is a constant factor.
After testing the new Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil™ Serum Mist, here’s my professional breakdown.
At first glance, reducing frizz and increasing shine sound like two separate benefits.
They’re actually two results of the same thing.
Both happen when the hair cuticle lays as flat as possible along the hair shaft.
When the cuticle is smooth and uniform, it reflects more light, making the hair appear shinier. It also creates a barrier that makes it more difficult for moisture in the air to penetrate the hair strand.
That’s important because humidity is one of the biggest causes of frizz. As moisture enters the hair, the strand swells and disrupts your style.
In theory, the Olaplex No. 7 Serum Mist helps encourage a smoother cuticle, leading to both less frizz and more shine.
Personally, I think this product will benefit damaged hair more than healthy hair.
If your hair has been:
your cuticle is generally more lifted than someone with virgin, healthy hair.
That means there’s more opportunity for a smoothing product like this to make a noticeable difference.
Olaplex also says the product helps strengthen hair.
That’s not something I can confidently evaluate after a short testing period, but the concept makes sense. If you’re consistently helping keep the cuticle smoother and minimizing repeated lifting, you’re also reducing one source of long-term damage.
Whether that translates into noticeably stronger hair would require months of regular use.
The science nerd in me immediately loved the bi-phase formula.
Looking at the bottle, it appears the original No. 7 Bonding Oil makes up the upper layer, while the lower layer is the new serum component.
Once shaken, the two combine into one lightweight mist.
What surprised me most was how long they stayed combined before separating again.
That tells me the serum isn’t dramatically heavier than the oil, allowing them to stay emulsified longer than I expected.
Professionally, my assumption is that:
Of course, only Olaplex knows the exact formulation, but that’s how it behaved during testing.
I’ve always liked the original No. 7 Bonding Oil.
But I actually prefer this version.
The biggest reason is the packaging.
Instead of dispensing oil into my hands and then working it through my hair, I can spray this exactly where I want it.
I don’t end up with excess product coating my palms or wiping leftover oil onto a towel afterward.
It feels more efficient and wastes less product.
The non-aerosol spray is another feature I really enjoyed.
It feels less aggressive than a traditional hairspray and almost gives the experience of using a luxury facial mist rather than a hair product.
This isn’t a product where more is necessarily better.
Here’s what I’d recommend:
Fine hair: 1–2 sprays
Medium hair: 2–3 sprays
Coarse, thick, or frizz-prone hair: 3–4 sprays
Starting with less is always easier than trying to remove excess product afterward.
Although Olaplex says it can be applied to damp hair, I personally prefer using it on dry hair.
Because the packaging doesn’t indicate it’s a heat-activated product, I found it works best as a finishing step rather than a styling product.
My own hair is naturally wavy.
Once I blow-dry it straight, it still has a slight fluffiness to it. That texture diffuses light instead of reflecting it evenly, making my hair appear duller than it actually is.
After using the Serum Mist, my hair looked noticeably smoother and reflected more light without feeling greasy or weighed down.
Absolutely—but I see it as part of a healthy hair routine rather than a miracle product.
If you’re getting married and dealing with frizz, dryness, or dullness, I think this is a great addition to your pre-wedding hair care routine.
If Olaplex ever released a smaller travel size, I’d happily keep one in my bridal kit. I could see myself reaching for it on clients with coarse or frizz-prone hair before refining sections with a heated round brush.
That said, this isn’t one of those products where skipping it means your hairstyle won’t turn out.
It’s the finishing touch that helps healthy-looking hair look even better.
Overall, I think the Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil™ Serum Mist is a thoughtful evolution of the original No. 7 Bonding Oil.
If your hair falls somewhere between 2C and 4C, or if your hair is color-treated, heat-damaged, or prone to frizz, I think you’ll appreciate what this product offers.
If your hair is naturally fine, straight, and already fairly smooth (roughly 1A–2B), I’d probably recommend using a lightweight shine mist and a separate hydrating serum instead. You’ll get more targeted hydration without adding unnecessary weight.
For the right hair type, though, this is a product I’d feel comfortable recommending. It smooths the cuticle, boosts shine, helps tame frizz, and offers a more convenient application than the original oil—something I didn’t realize I’d appreciate until I tried it.
